New Delhi: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Thursday invoked Stage III restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR due to increasing air pollution and a sharp decline in the Air Quality Index (AQI). The AQI was recorded at 357 at 4 p.m. on January 9, a significant rise from 297 on January 8, with calm winds and dense fog worsening the situation. According to the CAQM, these measures are in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directions, which mandate the implementation of GRAP when air quality levels deteriorate. The commission has confirmed that in addition to the Stage III restrictions, the measures under Stage I and II of the revised GRAP will remain in effect. Authorities have emphasized that they will continue to monitor and review AQI levels across Delhi and the surrounding NCR region.

Residents of Delhi woke up to dense fog on Thursday, further contributing to the hazardous air quality. The minimum temperature was recorded at five degrees Celsius, with the maximum expected to reach 21 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department’s forecast. The cold wave conditions have only exacerbated the pollution levels, making it more difficult for people to breathe clean air. On January 5, the CAQM had revoked the Stage III restrictions after the AQI levels showed a positive trend and air quality improved. However, the sudden dip in air quality has prompted the CAQM to re-implement the strict measures. Under Stage III of the GRAP, various restrictions and measures are imposed to control pollution, including limiting construction and demolition activities, halting the use of diesel generators, and restricting certain industrial activities that contribute to air pollution. The public has been urged to strictly follow the guidelines set by the authorities for their health and safety.

The CAQM also reminded citizens to adhere to the GRAP Stage III measures, which include limiting outdoor activities, avoiding strenuous exercise, and wearing masks in areas with high pollution. As the situation continues to evolve, the authorities have stressed the importance of cooperation from residents to combat air pollution in the capital.
