Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a notice to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) after the Watchdog foundation filed a complaint in this regard to stop the sewage and debris discharged in the major nullah near P&T Colony.

The construction of Sahar Metro Railway Station under Metro 4 project by Metro Railway Corporation is in its final stages. This work is being done by contractor J. Kumar.

During the construction, the effluent is being discharged illegally in the nullah near P&T colony. The effluent from the construction of Sahar Metro Station is discharged into the P&T Nullah. Therefore, there is a danger of obstruction in the nullah and flood-like situation may occur.

This work has been going on for the last two years and this has created a blockage in the flow of the nullah by accumulating of silt up to 3 feet in the nullah.

The P&T nullah is an important nullah in the division and the sewage from Sahar, Marol, and Kadamwadi area is carried through this nullah, and further meets to Mithi River. Therefore, there is a possibility of large amount radar rods of garbage in this nullah going into Mithi river.

After realizing the negligence of the Metro contractor, the residents lodged a complaint at BMC’s K East ward office and demanded action. The BMC officials took serious note of the complaints made and inspected the P&T Nullah site.

During the inspection it was revealed that radar rods were being thrown into the nullah by the Metro contractor. After that, the K East ward Office of the Municipal Corporation has issued a notice to the Metro Railway Corporation asking them to clean the radar rods in the nullah immediately or otherwise strict action will be initiated.

The notice states that the contractor constructing the Sahar metro station is discharging sewage illegally in the nullah. It is mentioned in the notice of the municipality that this contractor has done illegal work in the same way before also. Therefore, Metro Corporation should take immediate action against the contractor.

“A notice has been issued to the Metro Authority. They have been instructed to take action against the contractor and also to clear the culvert. Ignoring the notice will result in penal or police action”, said K East ward officer, Prashant Sakpale.

Complaints have been lodged with the municipality against the Metro Authority and their contractors. The contractors of the Metro Authority are doing this deliberately and this is causing great inconvenience to the local people.

Frequent complaints have been lodged to the BMC against the Metro Authority and their contractors should be taken seriously and action should be taken, otherwise we will have to consider a court battle”, said Godfrey Pimenta, Watchdog Foundation.
