In a recent turn of events, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has come out in support of Vinod Kumar Sonkar, chairman of the Ethics Committee, following allegations made by Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra. Moitra had written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, claiming that she experienced mistreatment during a hearing on the cash-for-query allegations against her.

Dubey took to social media to express his support for Sonkar, who hails from a scheduled caste. He revealed that Sonkar faced abusive language and derogatory names during the committee meeting, including being referred to as a “scoundrel,” “Bihari goon,” and “Jharkhandi dog.”

The BJP MP from Jharkhand’s Godda questioned the basis of Moitra’s allegations, emphasizing that her gender should not be used as proof to undermine corruption charges against her. He further criticized opposition MPs for supporting Moitra’s claims, suggesting that they could be playing the victim card to evade accountability.

Nishikant Dubey had previously led the call for an investigation into allegations that Moitra provided her Parliament login ID to businessman Darshan Hiranandani to target the Adani Group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He asserted that the evidence submitted by him, along with the support from advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai and various ministries, leaves no room for Moitra to escape scrutiny.

Dubey also stated that the parliamentary panel would ensure that no Member of Parliament could engage in similar activities in the future. Moitra had been accused of asking questions through her parliamentary account at the behest of Hiranandani, allegedly in exchange for bribes and favors.

This development came after opposition members of the ethics panel, along with Moitra, walked out of the meeting, accusing the committee’s chairperson of posing personal and unethical questions. Moitra’s letter to Om Birla highlighted her concerns regarding the biased nature of the questions asked during the hearing.

The situation remains fluid, with Moitra’s allegations and the Ethics Committee’s response under the spotlight.
