Mumbai: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha MP Gopal Shetty on Thursday met Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal and discussed many housing projects which are getting affected causing delay in availability of houses to the people involved in various project works in Mumbai.

The housing project is to provide housing to around 6,700 Project Affected People (PAP). But to provide houses to all PAP’s BMC does not have enough land. Due to this many projects are pending. BMC has sought ideas from the public representatives in this matter.

Gopal Shetty said that Mumbai can become slum-free in 10 years if all government agencies including the government, BMC are determined. For this, BMC, SRA and MHADA will have to work together honestly. He said, “the BMC can acquire the land and by building a 300 square feet house, the BMC administration can give houses to the project affected people. Mumbai can be made a slum-free area if BMC works in a planned manner. If all government agencies work together, Mumbai can become slum free in 10 years.

Further, while speaking to the News21, he said “BMC has asked the public representative to come out with their ideas. I had handed over a letter which stated of the two proposals to overcome the shortage of land, the corporation has a lot of such land which was earlier a no development zone and later was converted into a special development zone.

There is no mangrove here, no construction work done. The government has included this land in the CRZ. BMC can acquire this land for the project affected 20,000 people and can provide houses by constructing houses for them.”
