Chennai: In a significant political development ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday announced a formal alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The announcement came during Shah’s visit to Chennai, marking a new chapter in the saffron party’s electoral strategy in the southern state.
Addressing a press conference, Shah said, “Seat distribution and the distribution of ministries after the government is formed, both will be decided later.” He also clarified that there are no pre-alliance conditions between the two parties and the BJP will not interfere in the AIADMK’s internal affairs.
Shah took the opportunity to launch a scathing attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by Chief Minister MK Stalin. He accused the DMK of using emotive issues like religion, the NEET examination, and the three-language policy as tools to distract the public from its failures. “The ruling DMK is raking up the issues of religion, NEET, and the three-language policy to divert attention,” said Shah.
Acknowledging the differences between the BJP and AIADMK on key policy matters, including NEET and the language issue, Shah said the alliance partners would work out a “common minimum programme” to guide their joint governance agenda.
In a related development, the BJP also named senior leader Nainar Nagendran as its new Tamil Nadu unit president, replacing outgoing chief K Annamalai. Nagendran, who returned to the BJP fold after a stint with the AIADMK, was the only nominee in the fray and is set to become the 13th state president of the party.
