Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh stepped down from his post on Sunday following a crucial meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. His resignation came amid speculation of a no-confidence motion and floor test by the Congress scheduled for Monday.

In his resignation letter to the Governor, Singh expressed gratitude to the central government for its “timely actions, interventions, and developmental work” for the people of Manipur. “It has been an honour to serve the people of Manipur thus far,” he wrote.

The Congress party reacted sharply, calling Singh’s resignation a move to “save face.” The opposition alleged that the BJP-led government was attempting to avoid a floor test by stepping down before the Assembly session.

Following Singh’s resignation, uncertainty looms over the political future of Manipur, which has been grappling with ethnic violence for months. Reports suggest that the Centre may impose President’s rule, as Parliament is currently in session, making it easier to get approval from both Houses.

Until further decisions are made, Governor Anusuiya Uikey has reportedly asked Singh to continue as the caretaker CM with limited powers. Singh, in his resignation, is also said to have recommended keeping the Assembly in “suspended animation” to allow BJP MLAs to decide on his successor.

In a fresh twist, shortly after Singh’s resignation, the Governor issued a notification declaring the previous order summoning the Assembly on Monday as “null and void.” Meanwhile, sources indicate that the BJP will announce a new Chief Minister within the next 48 hours.

As per reports, if the BJP fails to stake claim to form the government by February 12, the Manipur Assembly will be dissolved. The coming days will determine whether the BJP manages to install a new CM or if the state heads towards President’s rule.
