Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party has launched a fresh political offensive against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of selectively questioning the credibility of election outcomes depending on whether results favour his party. The criticism comes after Gandhi welcomed the United Democratic Front’s performance in the Kerala local body elections, triggering sharp reactions from BJP leaders during the ongoing winter session of Parliament.
Senior BJP leader Amit Malviya took to social media to challenge Gandhi’s remarks, alleging a repeated pattern in his political conduct. Malviya claimed that whenever the Congress suffers electoral setbacks, Gandhi raises doubts over electronic voting machines and speaks of alleged irregularities, while accepting the same electoral system without hesitation when the party secures victories.
According to the BJP, such selective acceptance undermines the spirit of democracy. Malviya argued that democratic institutions function on public trust and consistency, not convenience. “One cannot applaud the system after a win and discredit it after a loss,” he said, adding that this approach damages confidence in the electoral process.
The BJP leader further stated that questioning election results without presenting concrete evidence raises serious concerns about political responsibility. He stressed that parties and leaders who regularly participate in elections must also show respect for the outcomes, even when they are unfavourable.
The issue has added to the heated political exchanges between the BJP and the Congress in Parliament, where debates over electoral reforms and democratic practices have remained contentious.
