Addressing the topic of Manipur violence during his speech in the Lok Sabha’s no-confidence motion debate, Home Minister Amit Shah remarked that the violence in the northeastern state was regrettable, but he found the opposition’s politicization of the issue even more regrettable.
He accused the opposition of avoiding a genuine debate on the issue and instead opting for political maneuvering over this sensitive matter.
Shah acknowledged Manipur’s history of ethnic tensions and suggested that the current situation should be viewed within that historical context.
“The BJP government has been leading Manipur for six years, and during this time, there has not been a single day of curfew or blockade,” Shah stated.
The Home Minister also defended the Chief Minister of the state, N Biren Singh, whose resignation had been demanded by the opposition for a long time. Shah stated, “A Chief Minister is replaced when he fails to cooperate. This Chief Minister is cooperating.”
Shah accused Rahul Gandhi of engaging in theatrics during his visit to Manipur. “Rahul Gandhi visited Manipur, and while I appreciate his visit, he chose to travel by road despite our suggestion to use a helicopter, engaging in political theatrics. Interestingly, he opted for a helicopter the next day… If you believe you can disrupt the government’s functioning without being noticed by the people, you are mistaken,” he elaborated.
In his Lok Sabha address within the context of the no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government, Home Minister Amit Shah stressed that both the citizens and the house itself had no lack of confidence in the government. He expressed his opinion that the motion had been brought forth as an attempt to mislead the public.
Shah highlighted that the public’s trust in the government remains unwavering, citing his extensive interactions across the nation that showed no signs of doubt about the government’s actions. He further asserted that the Modi government has gained the highest level of public trust seen in any administration since India’s independence.
Notably, Shah highlighted that the Modi government achieved a remarkable milestone by securing a complete majority mandate for two consecutive terms after three decades. He applauded Prime Minister Modi’s global recognition as the most popular leader, known for dedicating seventeen hours of his day to work without taking any days off.
“After Independence, only PM Modi’s government has gained the trust of the majority of the people. PM Modi is the most popular leader among the public… He tirelessly works for the country’s people, putting in continuous efforts for 17 hours a day, without taking any leave. The people trust him,” Amit Shah stated.
Enumerating the achievements of the Modi government, Shah pointed out that more than fifty historic decisions had been made in the span of nine years. He stressed how the government, under Modi’s leadership, had effectively tackled corruption, dynastic politics, and appeasement, encapsulated by the slogan “Corruption quit India, dynasticism quit India, appeasement quit India.”
Shah criticized the no-confidence motion as a diversionary tactic and drew a clear distinction between the practices of the UPA and the BJP. He stated that the UPA’s tendency was to engage in corruption to retain power, while the BJP adhered to principled politics.
Taking a jab at the Congress, Shah asserted that the party had strayed from its values and moral compass. He then proceeded to list the achievements of the Modi government, showcasing initiatives like the Ujjwala scheme and the construction of toilets.
Regarding economic matters, Shah contrasted the Congress’ approach of loan waivers with the BJP’s strategy of empowering farmers to avoid falling into debt. He emphasized that instead of forgiving loans, the government had chosen to directly transfer funds to farmers’ bank accounts, providing effective assistance.
In this address, Home Minister Amit Shah offered a robust defense of the Modi government’s actions and policies, emphasizing the government’s dedication to principles, development, and the people’s welfare.
Shah further highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s exceptional recognition as the sole leader to receive the highest honors from 14 different countries worldwide.
Shifting the focus to the defense sector, Shah pointed out that most of the corruption in defense deals occurred during the Congress regime. In contrast, he highlighted the BJP’s efforts to promote self-reliance by domestically manufacturing defense equipment, contributing to the vision of an “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India).
In a veiled reference to Rahul Gandhi, Shah commented, “We have seen an opposition leader being launched 13 times, with each attempt ultimately failing.”
Shah then recounted a pivotal incident involving the Congress and Rahul Gandhi. He reminded the House of how the Congress had extensively publicized Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the home of Kalavati Bandurkar, a widow from Yavatmal’s Jalka village. In 2008, Rahul had visited Kalavati’s village during his nationwide tour and highlighted her plight in a Lok Sabha speech. Her husband’s alleged suicide due to agrarian challenges was a tragic backdrop.
Challenging the Congress’ actions, Shah asserted that despite their publicity, they had failed to bring meaningful change to Kalavati’s life. It was, in fact, the BJP-led government that improved her circumstances. He questioned the Congress’ contributions, highlighting that it was under the Modi government’s leadership that Kalavati was provided with housing, essential supplies, and electricity.
Amit Shah affirmed the transformation in the situation in Kashmir since 2014 due to the implementation of his government’s policies. “Our dedicated efforts have been aimed at eradicating terrorism from the region,” Shah stated.
He emphasized a shift in the government’s approach, stating, “Our engagement is now focused on the youth of the Kashmir Valley, leaving aside discussions with groups like Hurriyat and Jamiat. Notably, the customary funeral processions of terrorists are no longer a prevalent sight as they are interred at the very sites of their demise. Furthermore, the once-prevalent trend of stone pelting in Jammu and Kashmir has been completely quashed.”
Shah underscored the government’s actions on the national security front, stating, “Our decisive stance led to the prohibition of PFI across the nation. Notably, extensive operations were conducted across more than 90 locations. Cases related to attacks on our diplomatic missions in London, Ottawa, and San Francisco were transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Additionally, Tahawwur Hussain Rana, associated with the 26/11 attacks, is set to face the Indian judiciary system in the near future.”
Amit Shah stated that Article 370 emerged from the erroneous strategies of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Prime Minister Modi, in a historic move, undertook the decision to fully integrate Jammu and Kashmir into India.
“The PM Modi government has been consistently working to eliminate terrorism from Kashmir. Now, no one in Kashmir dares to engage in stone pelting,” Amit Shah remarked.
