The Nobel Peace Prize for 2023 has been bestowed upon Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi for her unwavering dedication to fighting against the oppression of women in Iran and her relentless advocacy for human rights and freedom. In the face of immense adversity, including 13 arrests, five convictions, and a cumulative prison sentence of 31 years, Mohammadi has remained a steadfast symbol of resistance against systemic discrimination.
Born in Zanjan, Iran, Narges Mohammadi pursued a degree in Physics at Imam Khomeini International University. Her early dedication to women’s rights set her on a path of activism that would define her life’s work. She became closely associated with the Defenders of Human Rights Center in Tehran, an organization founded by Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi. In 2011, Mohammadi was initially arrested for her efforts in assisting incarcerated activists. Following her release on bail in 2013, she continued her tireless work, campaigning ardently against the death penalty. Unfortunately, her advocacy led to another arrest in 2015, yet she persevered even within the confines of prison.
Narges Mohammadi’s activism traces back to the 1990s when she was a physics student, and her commitment remained undiminished despite facing repeated imprisonments. She fearlessly campaigned against the death penalty and exposed the Iranian regime’s use of torture and sexual violence against political prisoners, particularly women.
Throughout her imprisonments, Mohammadi remained a beacon of leadership. She supported and organized acts of solidarity among her fellow inmates and maintained her advocacy through various means, including penning articles published in international media outlets.
The Nobel Peace Prize for 2023 is a tribute to Narges Mohammadi’s unwavering struggle for the rights and freedom of women in Iran. It also acknowledges the broader movement within Iran, sparked by the tragic death of Mahsa Jina Amini in 2022. Amini’s death prompted widespread protests against the Iranian theocratic regime, with hundreds of thousands of Iranians rallying under the banner of “Woman – Life – Freedom.” These demonstrations underscored the urgent call for equality, dignity, and freedom for all individuals, transcending gender lines.
Through this award, the Norwegian Nobel Committee not only honors Narges Mohammadi but also recognizes her courageous fight for human rights, freedom, and democracy in Iran, amplifying the voices of countless others who strive for a more just and equitable society.
