The corridors of Delhi’s administrative machinery are set for a significant shake-up as the Centre gears up for a substantial bureaucratic rejig that could influence various key departments within the Delhi government and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), among others. Anticipated to unfold by the end of the month, this exercise is poised to impact several critical posts, marking a noteworthy administrative transition.
Reliable sources have hinted at impending appointments for pivotal positions within departments under the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, as well as prospective ripple effects in the Union Territories of Puducherry and Chandigarh. The latter has been operating without an Adviser to the Administrator, a role equivalent to a Chief Secretary in states, following the retirement of Dharampal, a senior IAS officer, in late October.
The imminent reshuffle, reportedly set to coincide with the 3rd National Conference of Chief Secretaries to be presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi between December 27 and 29, has been delayed owing to this scheduled high-profile event. This upcoming bureaucratic overhaul is expected to affect the transfer and posting of numerous senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers from the AGMUT and central cadres.
This proposed shuffle assumes greater significance as it is likely the final restructuring of its kind before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The recent retirements of senior IAS officers across various administrative cadres, governing regions like Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and the Union Territories, have necessitated this comprehensive restructuring effort.
The retirement of key officials such as Delhi’s Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, Arun Kumar Mehta of Jammu & Kashmir, and the longstanding vacancy left by Dharampal in Chandigarh’s Administrator Advisor role have contributed to the urgency of these impending administrative changes. While Delhi and J&K have seen replacements in their top administrative roles, Chandigarh’s administration continues to function without a formally appointed successor.
