Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan made headlines on Tuesday as he officially joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), marking a significant shift in his political allegiance. Chavan’s move came just a day after tendering his resignation as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Congress party.
The induction ceremony, held at the BJP’s office, was attended by prominent leaders including Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar, and other BJP dignitaries. Speaking to the media earlier in the day, Chavan expressed optimism about his new political journey, emphasizing his commitment to the constructive development of Maharashtra under the BJP’s banner.
Addressing the media after formalizing his entry into the BJP, Chavan expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, and other party leaders for welcoming him into the fold.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hailed Chavan’s decision to join the BJP, highlighting his extensive political experience and leadership roles in both the Maharashtra Assembly and Lok Sabha. Chavan’s entry into the saffron party signifies a significant addition to its ranks and strengthens its position in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
Chavan’s departure from the Congress marks yet another setback for the grand old party in recent months. His exit closely follows the resignation of Mumbai Congress leader and former minister Baba Siddique, who joined the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) just two days prior. Siddique’s defection to the NCP further underscores the challenges facing the Congress party in retaining its leadership and unity in Maharashtra.
As political realignments continue to unfold in the state, the BJP’s gain of seasoned leaders like Ashok Chavan poses a formidable challenge to its rivals while reshaping the dynamics of Maharashtra’s political arena.
