Pakistan will vote for the general election on February 8. This election will determine the status and direction of Pakistan. However, most of the attention in this election is Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) president Nawaz Sharif and his younger brother Shahbaz Sharif. Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif certainly have a significant influence in Pakistan. It will be fascinating to see how their party, PML (Nawaz)  performs in the upcoming general election.

Nawaz has held the post of Prime Minister three times and Shahbaz once. Nawaz Sharif is also the most unlucky Prime Minister who has served as Prime Minister for the longest time. He has not been able to complete his five-year tenure even once. Different organisations played role in the dismissal of his government each time. This certainly sets a unique world record. Nawaz Sharif first became the Prime Minister in 1990. Within three years, the then President Ghulam Isaak Khan dissolved the Parliament itself.

Nawaz Sharif regained power after knocking on the Supreme Court’s door. However, Benazir Bhutto defeated him in the 1995 elections. Nawaz Sharif became the prime minister again in 1997. However, at this time, he had a strong disagreement with the Chief of Army Staff, Pervez Musharraf, and was overthrown in Musharraf’s military coup. Nawaz Sharif won the elections in 2013 and became prime minister again after nearly ten years in political exile abroad. This time, the Supreme Court of Pakistan came in their way.

After the Panama Papers scandal, Nawaz Sharif’s name came up in corruption cases. The Supreme Court convicted Nawaz Sharif and banned him from contesting elections for life. After nearly four years in London, Nawaz Sharif has returned to Pakistan. He has promised in his manifesto that if his party comes to power, he will reduce electricity rates by 20 to 30 percent. Bringing the population under control and simultaneously increasing power generation by at least 15,000 MW are his other major promises.

Nawaz Sharif has also announced that if India reinstates Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, it will maintain friendly relations with India through peaceful means. The chances of Nawaz Sharif’s victory in the upcoming elections are high. Voters are very curious about whether he will complete his tenure for the fourth time and keep his promises.
