Security has been tightened across Delhi after several important locations, including Delhi Airport, the Delhi High Court and the Red Fort, received bomb threats on Friday, just a day before Independence Day celebrations.
Authorities received a threatening email warning of possible explosions on August 15 and naming several locations in the national capital. Security teams immediately began searches at the affected sites.
So far, officials have said that nothing suspicious has been found.
What did the threatening email say?
The email reportedly mentioned the Delhi High Court, district courts, the Red Fort and trains in Delhi as possible targets.
It also contained references to making Delhi part of Khalistan.
The email reportedly carried the subject line “BOMB Blast Delhi High Court @ 2:11 PM” and claimed that an explosion would take place on August 15.
The sender also made allegations concerning cases involving Sikhs, including matters related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, and linked those claims to the threats.
Several Delhi locations placed under security watch
The threat was not limited to the locations mentioned in the email. Authorities also received bomb threat calls concerning several other government and public establishments.
These included:
- Jam Nagar House
- FLATED building in Jhandewalan
- DM Office in MB Saket
- Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport
- SDM Office in Delhi Cantonment
Fire department personnel and other emergency teams were sent to the locations following the threats.
Search operations were conducted, but authorities said no suspicious object had been detected so far.
Security stepped up across Delhi
The threats have come at a particularly sensitive time as Delhi prepares for Independence Day celebrations on August 15.
Security agencies have increased surveillance around important government buildings, transport hubs, public places and other sensitive locations.
Officials are coordinating with multiple agencies to ensure that security arrangements remain in place throughout the celebrations.
Delhi Police had already increased security
The latest threats come after Delhi Police had already announced enhanced security measures ahead of Independence Day.
Earlier this week, photographs of 19 wanted terrorists linked to groups including Indian Mujahideen, Al-Qaeda and Khalistani organisations were displayed at different locations in the capital.
Officials had cited intelligence inputs pointing to possible threats from Pakistan-based terror organisations and Khalistani elements.
Police were also monitoring the possibility of sudden protests or other disruptions during the Independence Day events.
Investigation continues
Authorities are now examining the origin and credibility of the threats while continuing searches at the locations mentioned.
The fact that searches have not found anything suspicious so far provides some reassurance, but security agencies are maintaining heightened vigilance because the threats were issued immediately before one of the country’s biggest national events.
Further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
