Delhi: Relations between India and Bangladesh may soon see a fresh start as New Delhi is expected to fully restart visa services in the neighbouring nation. The development comes shortly after Tarique Rahman took charge as Prime Minister.

Officials say the move could mark the beginning of a new chapter in diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

Step Toward Normal Relations

India’s Assistant High Commissioner in Sylhet recently highlighted that the relationship between the two nations is based on mutual respect and shared interests. He said people from both countries play a major role in maintaining friendly and stable ties.

According to officials, restoring visa services will help students, patients, businesspersons and families who regularly travel between the two countries. The decision is being seen as a confidence-building measure under the new leadership in Dhaka.

Why Were Visa Services Suspended?

India had temporarily stopped visa operations in Bangladesh after the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. The incident led to protests in several parts of Bangladesh. Some demonstrations reportedly turned critical of India, creating tension.

Due to safety concerns and rising diplomatic strain, Indian visa centres had paused their work.

Fresh Diplomatic Signals

In another important gesture, Narendra Modi has invited Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit India. The message was delivered through Om Birla, who attended Rahman’s swearing-in ceremony in Dhaka, he represented India at the swearing-in ceremony as part of parliamentary and diplomatic protocol, signalling New Delhi’s formal goodwill and institutional engagement with the incoming leadership.

The letter conveyed congratulations and extended an invitation for an official visit at a convenient time. Analysts believe such diplomatic outreach could help reset relations and strengthen cooperation in trade, connectivity and regional security.

What This Means for the Region

India and Bangladesh share deep historical, cultural and economic ties. Smooth visa services are considered an important part of people-to-people connection.

If fully restored, visa operations may signal that both governments are ready to move beyond recent tensions and focus on long-term partnership.
