Delhi: Fresh details have emerged in the tragic BMW accident that claimed the life of Navjot Singh, Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, raising serious questions over emergency response and alleged negligence.

The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon near Dhaula Kuan on Ring Road, when Singh and his wife, Sandeep Kaur, were returning from Bangla Sahib Gurdwara on their motorcycle. A speeding blue BMW reportedly struck the couple from behind, throwing them violently onto the road. Singh suffered severe injuries to his head, face, and legs, while Kaur sustained multiple fractures. Kaur, who was wearing a helmet at the time, said Singh had tied his turban instead of a helmet.

Singh’s family has alleged that instead of being taken to a nearby hospital, the couple was transported nearly 19 kilometers away to a small facility allegedly connected to the BMW driver. Speaking to the media, Singh’s sister-in-law said, “The family is angry and devastated… They are saying that to save themselves (accused), they took Navjot so far away when big hospitals were located around Dhaula Kuan… Had he been taken on time, his life could have been saved… His parents, who are over 80 years old, are inconsolable. We want justice, whoever is guilty – whether it is the hospital or the lady (BMW’s driver) – must be punished.”

The van driver who transported the injured couple also shared his account. He stated that after seeing Singh and Kaur on the road, he stepped in to help. However, he claimed that another woman in the van — reportedly the BMW driver — instructed him to drive to Azadpur, approximately 30 minutes from Dhaula Kuan. “The woman kept talking to a doctor on the phone, telling him to arrange everything as we are coming. This was the same woman who was driving the BMW,” the driver said.

Police confirmed that the BMW driver and her husband, a businessman from Gurugram, also sustained injuries in the accident and are receiving treatment. The BMW and the motorcycle involved in the crash have been seized, while the spot was examined by a crime team with assistance from the Forensic Science Laboratory. An FIR has been registered, and an investigation is ongoing.
