The Maharashtra government has announced a public holiday on December 6, 2024, in observance of Mahaparinirvan Diwas, marking the death anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. According to an official circular, the holiday will be observed across all government and semi-government offices in Mumbai and its suburban districts. This decision aligns with the General Administration Department’s 1996 circular outlining provisions for local holidays.

Since 2007, Mumbai has received local holidays for Anant Chaturdashi and Gopalkala (Dahi Handi), making the upcoming observance the third local holiday of 2024 for the region. Mahaparinirvan Diwas honors Dr. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and a pivotal figure in India’s social reform movement. The day is commemorated with statewide tributes and events.

To facilitate the anticipated influx of visitors paying homage to Dr. Ambedkar at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar, the Central Railway has announced 12 additional suburban special trains operating between December 5 night and early December 6.

Special Train Schedule:

  • Parel-Thane Special: Departs Parel at 1:15 AM, reaches Thane at 1:55 AM.
  • Parel-Kalyan Special: Departs Parel at 2:25 AM, reaches Kalyan at 3:40 AM.
  • Parel-Kurla Special: Departs Parel at 3:05 AM, reaches Kurla at 3:20 AM.

These trains will make stops at all stations along their respective routes. The Railway Administration has urged commuters to ensure they carry valid tickets to avoid inconvenience.

The holiday and additional transportation arrangements underscore Maharashtra’s respect for Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy and the significance of Mahaparinirvan Diwas in the state’s cultural calendar.
