In light of recent controversies, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar has issued a strong directive against derogatory remarks on women leaders during Maharashtra’s ongoing assembly election campaign. In a review meeting with election officials, including District Election Officers, Police Commissioners, and Returning Officers, the CEC emphasized the importance of upholding the dignity of women in the electoral process.
“Political parties and candidates must refrain from any deeds, actions, or utterances that could be seen as disrespectful to the honor and dignity of women,” Kumar stated, underscoring the Election Commission’s commitment to enforcing the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). He further instructed officials to act promptly against any violations, particularly those involving indecorous remarks about women candidates or leaders.
Kumar’s statements follow a recent incident in Maharashtra’s political scene where Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant allegedly made derogatory comments about Shaina NC, a prominent figure in Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction. The remarks sparked significant backlash, particularly as Shaina NC is contesting the Mumbadevi constituency seat in the upcoming elections. Political tensions surrounding this incident have intensified, drawing attention to issues of decorum and respect in political discourse.
The CEC reminded election officers to focus on preventing personal attacks unrelated to public responsibilities, urging candidates and leaders to demonstrate respect toward all political figures, particularly women. “Private lives of leaders and workers, which do not affect their public duties, should not be subject to criticism,” he added, stressing that low-level personal attacks undermine the electoral environment.
Kumar also expressed hope that political parties and their candidates would show respect in their speeches and interactions, fostering a campaign environment that reflects the values of dignity and mutual respect. His instructions reflect the Election Commission’s broader efforts to ensure ethical conduct throughout the electoral process, particularly in highly polarized political climates.
