Mumbai is set to welcome a return of wet weather after an extended dry spell, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting thundershowers and rain beginning on the evening of September 23. This forecast marks a significant shift for residents who have been coping with higher-than-usual temperatures due to the lack of precipitation.

Following a prolonged period without rain, the IMD has reported total rainfall figures of 2,308.8 mm at the Colaba observatory and 2,605.4 mm at the Santa Cruz observatory for the season. The recent dry spell has resulted in elevated daytime and nighttime temperatures, with Colaba recording a minimum temperature of 26.8 degrees Celsius and Santa Cruz at 25.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

As of now, water levels in the city’s lakes stand at 14.20 lakh million liters, nearing 98.15% capacity, indicating a need for replenishment through upcoming rains. The weather forecast for September 23 suggests a low of 26 degrees Celsius and a high of 32 degrees Celsius, accompanied by overcast skies and a likelihood of light rain or drizzle.

Looking ahead, the IMD predicts a slight drop in temperatures for September 24, with a minimum of 25 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 31 degrees Celsius. The skies are expected to be partly cloudy, with moderate rain or thunderstorms possible.

On September 25, the weather will take a turn for the cooler, with temperatures ranging from a low of 22 degrees Celsius to a high of 30 degrees Celsius, as heavy rain is forecasted under cloudy skies. The trend of cool temperatures and rain will continue into September 26, with highs reaching 28 degrees Celsius and light rain expected.

As the week progresses, rain is anticipated on September 27, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C. More rain is forecasted for September 28, with temperatures between 26°C and 30°C.

Residents are advised to stay informed about the changing weather conditions and prepare for potential thunderstorms as the city braces for much-needed rain.
