India is bracing for a scorching summer ahead as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts extreme heat during the April to June period. The central and western peninsular regions are expected to bear the brunt of the heatwave, posing challenges as the country gears up for seven-phase general elections starting from April 19.

Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of IMD, issued a warning stating that above-normal maximum temperatures are anticipated across most parts of the country during the April-June period, with central and western peninsular India likely to experience the highest impact.

While certain regions of the western Himalayas, northeastern states, and north Odisha may witness normal to below-normal maximum temperatures, the plains are expected to face above-normal heatwave conditions during this period. Mohapatra highlighted a significant increase in the number of heatwave days, with expectations of 10 to 20 days of heatwaves in various parts of the country, compared to the normal range of four to eight days.

Regions such as Gujarat, central Maharashtra, north Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, north Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh are projected to be the hardest hit by the heatwaves. April is expected to see above-normal maximum temperatures over most parts of the country, particularly central south India, while some areas of the western Himalayan region and northeastern states may experience normal to below-normal maximum temperatures.
