Assembly Speaker, Rahul Narwekar, staunchly defended his decision to acknowledge Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s faction as the authentic Shiv Sena, emphasizing that his actions were in accordance with the guidelines provided by the Supreme Court. The controversy stems from the disqualification petitions filed by both Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray’s camps against each other’s MLAs following a split in the party in June 2022.
In a press conference held after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray criticized Narwekar’s ruling on January 10, the Speaker addressed the media and clarified the basis for his decision. Narwekar maintained that the Sena’s 1999 constitution would be the valid one for determining the legitimate Shiv Sena faction.
Expressing his displeasure with the criticism directed at him, Narwekar stated, “For the last six days, some political leaders and workers have been misleading people about my judgment. Shiv Sena (UBT) is using derogatory language against me. They don’t even respect the Assembly speaker. It’s really harmful to the democratic structure.”
Narwekar elaborated on his decision to reject the undivided Shiv Sena’s amended constitution of 2018. He highlighted that at that time, the party had informed the Election Commission only about Uddhav Thackeray being the party chief without submitting the amended constitution.
Emphasizing the importance of practical implementation of party rules, Narwekar stated, “My actions were based on the Supreme Court’s guidelines.”
Responding to the ongoing dispute, Uddhav Thackeray openly challenged both Shinde and Narwekar to engage in a public debate to determine the authentic Shiv Sena faction. Thackeray questioned the BJP’s request for his support in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, highlighting the significance of the ongoing conflict in determining the future of democracy in the country.
The battle between the two factions continues to unfold, with each side defending its position and vying for legitimacy in the eyes of the public and the democratic process.
