Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Bangladesh’s economic progress during an interactive session with business leaders in Karachi on Wednesday. He highlighted how what was once known as ‘East Pakistan’ had made significant advancements in industrial growth, transforming from a perceived burden to a beacon of economic success.
Addressing the gathering, Sharif reminisced about past perceptions, stating, “I was quite young when… we were told that it’s a burden on our shoulders… Today you all know where that ‘burden’ has reached (in terms of economic growth).” He expressed a sense of admiration for Bangladesh’s achievements, emphasizing, “And we feel ashamed when we look towards them.”
The prime minister engaged in discussions with Karachi’s business community at the Sindh CM House, focusing on strategies to uplift Pakistan’s economy. While the business leaders appreciated Sharif’s commitment to addressing economic challenges, they voiced concerns about political instability following the arrest of former PM Imran Khan.
Members of the business community urged Sharif to prioritize political stability to facilitate economic turnaround, as reported by Dawn newspaper. They also encouraged initiating trade talks with India, acknowledging the potential benefits for Pakistan’s economy.
The strained relations between India and Pakistan, exacerbated by India’s revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, have led to diplomatic tensions and a halt in direct trade. However, business leaders advised Sharif to explore avenues for improving ties with India, citing the positive outcomes achieved through diplomatic engagements, including progress on the IMF deal.
Arif Habib, Chief of Arif Habib Group, suggested leveraging diplomatic efforts to enhance trade relations with India, which could yield substantial economic advantages. Additionally, he recommended seeking reconciliation with imprisoned PTI leader Imran Khan, indicating the potential for resolving internal political rifts.
As Pakistan navigates economic challenges and seeks avenues for growth, Sharif’s engagement with the business community underscores the importance of stability and diplomatic initiatives in fostering economic prosperity.
