“Now I Have to Win the World Championship”: Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh Felicitated by Maharashtra CM

Nagpur: In a grand felicitation ceremony titled ‘Nagari Sanman Sohala’, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis honoured Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh, who recently made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup.

The event, held in Nagpur, was marked by pride and celebration as several top leaders joined the occasion, including Minister Adv Manikrao Kokate, MoS Adv Ashish Jaiswal, MLA Krishna Khopde, MLC Parinay Fuke, and other dignitaries.

Speaking at the ceremony, the young chess sensation said, “There are many targets ahead, but for now, I am a qualified player and now I have to win the World Championship. The first World Championship will be in Nagpur.”

Divya’s victory at the international level has not only brought immense pride to the nation but also inspired countless young athletes across India. The event saw a surge of enthusiasm from Nagpur residents, who view her as a rising symbol of excellence from their own city.

CM Fadnavis, while honouring her, hailed her achievement as “a golden moment in Indian chess history” and assured full support from the state in her journey ahead.
