Janata Dal (United)’s MLA Sudhanshu Shekhar has stirred controversy by filing an FIR alleging that he was offered a staggering sum of Rs 5 crores to defect to the RJD-led ‘Mahagathbandhan’ ahead of a crucial trust vote. Shekhar’s startling claims have sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Bihar, casting a shadow over the integrity of the state’s governance.
“I have given all the details in the FIR. I am not doing all this under any pressure. I was offered Rs 5 crores and a minister’s post in the cabinet. I received several internet calls but I didn’t entertain them,” stated Shekhar, shedding light on the alleged attempt to sway his allegiance.
In response to these allegations, JDU MLA Sanjeev Kumar expressed skepticism, suggesting that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar might not be aware of the situation. “Some leaders are there in our party who pressured the MLA and forced him to file an FIR,” Kumar remarked, hinting at internal rifts within the party.
The political turmoil comes on the heels of the JDU-BJP government’s successful passage of a crucial floor test on Monday, February 12. With 129 MLAs supporting the government out of the 243 members in the Bihar assembly, the JDU-BJP coalition comfortably surpassed the majority mark of 122. The victory underscored the consolidation of power following the breakdown of ties between JDU and RJD, paving the way for Nitish Kumar’s ninth term as Bihar Chief Minister.
The implications of the JDU-BJP government’s triumph extend beyond state politics, resonating strongly with the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With the NDA alliance, comprising the BJP and JD(U), reasserting its dominance, political analysts anticipate a significant impact on the electoral landscape. The resurgence of the NDA alliance is poised to challenge the electoral prospects of the RJD-led opposition, positioning itself for a formidable performance in the upcoming polls.
As Bihar grapples with the aftermath of Shekhar’s allegations and the ramifications of the recent political developments, the stage is set for a period of heightened tensions and strategic maneuvering among key stakeholders. The unfolding events will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of Bihar’s politics in the months to come, influencing both state governance and national electoral dynamics.
