“Hisab-Kitab Toh Dena Padega”: Mau MLA Abbas Ansari Sentenced to 2 Years in 2022 Hate Speech Case

Mau: Mau Sadar MLA Abbas Ansari, son of the late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison by the Uttar Pradesh MP/MLA court on Saturday in connection with a 2022 hate speech case. Along with the jail term, the court also imposed a fine of ₹2,000 on the MLA.

Abbas Ansari was present in court when the verdict was pronounced. His brother Mansoor Ansari, who was also involved in the same case, received a six-month jail sentence.

The case dates back to March 2022, during the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election campaign. Abbas Ansari was booked by the Mau Police after a controversial speech in Pahargarh, where he allegedly threatened government officials. A video of the speech went viral on social media, leading to legal action under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 506 (criminal intimidation).

As quoted by The Times of India, Abbas had said during his campaign rally:
“After formation of SP-led government, the officials would have to give ‘hisab-kitab’ (account) of their work of the past regime before getting transferred.”

He further claimed to have told Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav not to transfer any officers for six months after coming to power until their “accounts” were settled.
