Flydubai Hijack Scare: Flight FZ1073 Diverts to Saudi Arabia After Reported Pilot Fight, Emergency Codes Trigger Security Alert

A Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after a dramatic mid-air incident involving the aircraft’s pilots triggered emergency signals and briefly raised fears of a possible hijacking.

Flight FZ1073, operating from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv, sent two emergency transponder codes while flying towards Israel. The aircraft later changed course and landed safely at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

All passengers and crew were reported safe and accounted for following the landing.

What Happened On Flydubai Flight FZ1073?

The Boeing 737 operating the flight was heading towards Tel Aviv when it first transmitted code 7700, the international transponder signal used to indicate a general emergency.

A few minutes later, the aircraft transmitted code 7500. The code is used to indicate unlawful interference with an aircraft and is commonly associated with a possible hijacking.

The alert prompted authorities to take the situation seriously as the aircraft was approaching Israeli airspace.

The plane subsequently turned away from its original destination and headed towards Saudi Arabia before landing in Tabuk.

Israeli Fighter Jets Scrambled

The 7500 signal triggered a security response in Israel, with fighter aircraft reportedly scrambled to assess the situation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also held urgent security consultations as officials tried to determine what was happening aboard the aircraft.

The initial concern was that the plane could have been under unlawful control. However, the assessment later changed after information emerged about an incident inside the cockpit.

Pilot Altercation Reportedly Triggered Emergency

Israeli officials later said the incident was not believed to be a hijacking.

According to reports, the emergency signals were connected to a physical confrontation between the two pilots inside the cockpit.

Passenger accounts reported by several media outlets described screams coming from the front of the aircraft and a struggle involving a knife. Reuters also reported that a passenger described seeing a man with a knife forcing one of the pilots to the floor.

The exact sequence of events inside the cockpit remains under investigation.

Plane Reportedly Experienced A Sharp Descent

Flight-tracking information indicated that the aircraft also went through a significant drop in altitude during the incident.

Reuters reported that the aircraft descended by around 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds before the emergency signals were transmitted.

The aircraft later stabilised and was diverted towards Tabuk, where it landed safely.

Flydubai Confirms Incident, Says All Passengers Are Safe

Flydubai confirmed that flight FZ1073 had experienced an incident while travelling from Dubai to Ben Gurion Airport.

The airline said the aircraft landed safely at Tabuk and that all passengers were safe and accounted for. It also said its teams were working with the relevant authorities.

The airline has not publicly provided a detailed explanation of what happened inside the cockpit.

What Happened Inside The Cockpit?

Several details remain unclear.

Authorities have yet to establish the full sequence of the confrontation, including what led to the reported fight, how the emergency codes were activated and how control of the aircraft was maintained during the incident.

Reports about a knife attack and the circumstances surrounding the aircraft’s sudden descent are still being examined.

Investigators are expected to look at the pilots’ accounts, cockpit recordings and other available evidence as they reconstruct the incident.

Why Was The Flight Diverted To Saudi Arabia?

Once the emergency situation developed, the aircraft stopped its journey towards Tel Aviv and diverted to Tabuk.

The landing was notable because Saudi Arabia and Israel do not have formal diplomatic relations. However, flights between the UAE and Israel routinely use airspace in the region.

The immediate priority was to bring the aircraft down safely and ensure the passengers and crew were out of danger.

What We Know So Far

The confirmed sequence is that Flydubai flight FZ1073 left Dubai for Tel Aviv on September 30, transmitted emergency codes including 7500, changed course and landed safely at Tabuk Airport.

Israeli authorities subsequently said the incident was not considered a hijacking and linked the emergency to an altercation between the pilots.

Further details about the confrontation, including its cause and exactly how the emergency signals were activated, remain subject to investigation.
