“India Is Governed by the Constitution, Not the Quran”: BJP Mahila Morcha Chief Chitra Wagh Backs Triple Talaq Law

Maharashtra BJP Mahila Morcha president Chitra Kishor Wagh has made a strong political statement on polygamy and women’s rights, asserting that constitutional provisions, not religious texts, form the basis of law in India.

Speaking in Mumbai, Wagh said, “India and its rules and regulations are based on the Constitution and not on the Quran and hence all the rights mentioned in the Constitution are applicable to everyone.”

She further praised the Centre’s legislation on Triple Talaq, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing what she described as a strong legal safeguard for women across communities.

Wagh stated, “I am also proud that the Prime Minister has brought a strong law like Triple Talaq not only for Hindu women but also for Muslim sisters.”

Recalling her tenure in the Women’s Commission, she highlighted issues faced by women who were allegedly abandoned and left without support. She said, “When I was in the Women’s Commission, the way many women were abandoned…, what will happen to the future of those women…”

She also criticised previous governments and political parties, alleging that women’s welfare was often treated as a vote-bank issue rather than a policy priority.

Wagh added, “To date, those who have maintained this vote bank have not done anything for them, but the PM has done this and has implemented a strict law like Triple Talaq in this country, which is benefiting Muslim women.”
