Congress Leader Welcomes Party’s Decision on Kerala Leadership
Senior Congress leader K. C. Venugopal on Thursday publicly endorsed the party’s decision to appoint V. D. Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala, bringing an end to days of speculation over the top post.
Addressing reporters in New Delhi shortly after the official announcement, Venugopal congratulated Satheesan and expressed confidence in the incoming Congress-led government.
“The Congress high command has decided on VD Satheesan as the chief minister of Kerala. I wholeheartedly welcome that decision,” Venugopal said.
‘Government Will Fulfil Aspirations of Kerala’: Venugopal
Backing the party’s leadership choice, the Congress general secretary said the United Democratic Front had received a strong public mandate in the Assembly elections and now carried the responsibility of delivering on its promises.
“I congratulate VD Satheesan on this position. I think the people of Kerala have given a massive mandate to the UDF. The government under the leadership of VD Satheesan can fulfil the aspirations and promises made to the people of Kerala,” he stated.
Congress Took Over 10 Days to Finalise CM Face
The Congress leadership took more than a week after the declaration of election results to finalise the chief ministerial candidate, with intense internal discussions continuing behind closed doors.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front had secured a decisive victory in the Kerala Assembly elections announced earlier this month, but the question of leadership triggered considerable political activity within the party.
Multiple Senior Leaders Were in Contention
Several prominent Congress figures were reportedly considered for the chief minister’s post before the final decision was made.
Apart from Satheesan, names such as KC Venugopal and veteran Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala were also being discussed within party circles as possible contenders for the top role.
The leadership announcement is expected to stabilise the political atmosphere within the Congress camp as preparations begin for the formation of the new government in Kerala.
Focus Shifts to Cabinet Formation
With the leadership issue now settled, attention is likely to move towards cabinet expansion and allocation of portfolios in the incoming UDF administration.
Political observers believe the manner in which the Congress balances regional and factional representation in the cabinet could play a key role in maintaining unity within the alliance government.
