Mumbai: In one of the biggest anti-Maoist breakthroughs in recent years, security forces in Andhra Pradesh eliminated dreaded Naxal commander Madavi Hidma, the most feared face of the PLGA’s Battalion-1, in a pre-dawn encounter near the Andhra Pradesh–Telangana border. Hidma, long considered the mastermind behind several deadly attacks on Indian forces, carried a bounty of ₹1 crore.
The high-risk encounter unfolded early Tuesday morning when elite Greyhounds units moved into the thick East Godavari forest zone after receiving precise intelligence on the presence of a Maoist core team. As the forces closed in, a fierce exchange of fire erupted between 6 and 7 AM, resulting in the deaths of six Maoists, including Hidma and his second wife, Raje alias Rajakka, who was a key operative working closely with the Battalion-1 leadership.
Other neutralised cadres include Chelluri Narayana (alias Suresh), a known member of the Special Zonal Committee, and Tech Shankar, believed to be responsible for overseeing communications and explosive units within the organisation.
Andhra Pradesh DGP Harish Kumar Gupta confirmed the successful operation, calling it a “decisive strike” against Maoist leadership. He added that extensive search, sanitisation and combing operations are continuing across the region to rule out the presence of any remaining cadres.
Chhattisgarh’s Bastar IG P. Sundarraj also verified Hidma’s identity, stating that the elimination of a Central Committee member of this stature marks a major setback for the Maoist network that has long operated across the Andhra–Chhattisgarh jungles.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh ADG (Intelligence) Mahesh Chandra Laddha said that the encounter was the culmination of nearly 45 days of surveillance and movement-tracking of core Maoist units shifting from Chhattisgarh into Andhra Pradesh. Parallel operations carried out in Kakinada and Krishna districts resulted in the detention of 31 Maoists, including personnel from the security teams of senior leader Devji and Hidma’s Battalion-1.
