Kathmandu: Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who was sworn in on Friday, began her tenure with a clear message—her government does not seek power but aims to restore democracy in the wake of unprecedented youth-led protests.
Arriving at Singha Durbar around 11 am to assume her duties, Karki stepped into the Home Ministry building, which has now been designated as the Prime Minister’s office after protestors torched the official PMO during the 27-hour-long Gen Z movement.
Addressing the nation, Karki vowed accountability. “Those involved in the incident of vandalism will be investigated. My team and I are not here to taste power. The interim leader also acknowledged the youth-driven protests that toppled the KP Sharma Oli government. “The 27-hour movement is a first in Nepal. They are demanding economic equality and the eradication of corruption,” she said, underscoring the urgency of political reform.
According to officials, Karki is expected to announce the names of her cabinet members later in the day.
