In a significant development just hours before the announcement of assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Bombay High Court has dismissed a plea from Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena seeking to halt the swearing-in ceremony of seven newly appointed Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs).

The court’s decision clears the way for the Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Speaker, Neelam Gorhe, to administer the oath to the newly nominated MLCs shortly. The nominations have drawn attention, particularly as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured the majority with three of the seven appointments, while Eknath Shinde’s faction of the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) received two nominations each.

In a statement, the Legislative Council Deputy Speaker announced, “In pursuance of section 74 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the names of the Members nominated to the Maharashtra Legislative Council by the Governor of Maharashtra under sub-clause (e) of clause (3) and clause (5) of Article 171 of the Constitution of India are published for general information.”

The newly nominated MLCs include:

Chitra Kishor Wagh – Prabhadevi, Mumbai
Vikrant Patil – Panvel, Dist. Raigad
Dharmguru Babusing Maharaj Rathod – Washim
Pankaj Chhagan Bhujbal – Mazgaon, Mumbai
Idris Illiyas Naikwadi – Sangli
Hemant Shreeram Patil – Nanded
Manisha Kayande – Dadar (East), Mumbai
The ruling is seen as a setback for Uddhav Thackeray’s faction, which has been vocal about its opposition to the recent political maneuvers in Maharashtra. With the assembly elections on the horizon, this decision adds another layer to the already complex political landscape in the state.

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place soon, further consolidating the political dynamics within Maharashtra’s legislative framework as parties gear up for the upcoming elections.
