Treatment of patients will not delayed due to corona test

Mumbai: The new protocol issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) which says that antigen tests to be conducted on the emergency patients and serious patients coming in hospitals for treatment will no longer have to wait for the corona report before starting the treatment. 

The report of the antigen test arrives in 30 minutes, which will help doctors to start with the patient’s surgery within 30 minutes. In order to provide immediate treatment to the patients, the Department of Health has decided to insist on antigen testing.

Despite several attempts to bring the spread of the corona virus under control, the state had failed to do so. On Sunday, the ICMR issued fresh guidelines to follow a new protocol while treating emergency cases coming to the hospital for treatment irrespective of whether being corona affected or not. The latest guidelines issued to state’s to conduct antigen tests on the patients visiting hospitals to ascertain whether they are corona affected.

The guidelines have been given out to all the municipal commissioners to follow the new protocol. A process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations (algorithm).

According to the new protocol the hospitals will now conduct antigen tests on emergency cases coming to the hospital. The antigen test report will be received in 30 minutes and it will be helpful for the doctors to ensure whether the patient is corona affected or not.

The real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) test is usually performed for corona examination but it takes about a day or two for the report. Whereas the report of the antigen test comes within a few minutes. Many patients have lost their lives in the last few months due to delay of the corona report.

Due to fear of the virus, many cases have also been reported wherein patients have lost their lives as the hospital did not admit the patient without corona negative report. With a view to avoid such problems of the patients, the government has issued guidance information as per the rules of ICMR.

According to Dr. Deepak Vaidya, President of the Association of Medical Consultants (AMC), “the treatment of the patients was being hampered due to the delay of the test report. As serious patients suffering from heart disease heart patients were facing the problems as decisions for the angioplasty, angiography and bypass surgery had to be decided and taken soon.”

In the letter sent to the hospitals and the District Magistrate, the Health Department has also said about the antigen test to be conducted on the dead bodies. Due to the antigen test of the body, now the postmortem process will also be completed without delay. 

True Nat tests will be conducted on dead bodies, patients coming for emergency operation and pregnant women. Hospitals where there is no arrangement for a True Nat test, in such a situation an antigen test will be conducted.

For mentally ill patients and prisoners brought for medical checkup to the hospital will be put in quarantine for a week after completion of one week quarantine, antigen test will be conducted on them and as per the test report it will be decided to keep them in the isolation ward or to be admitted in the hospital’s general ward.

People travelling from outside, businessmen who do not have symptoms of Covid 19, will be exempted from the test.- By Vikas Nag
