Mumbai: The depositors of Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank can expect some relief in coming months as the state government body of co-operative banks has appointed an arbitrator who can start evaluating properties of the alleged accused that were seized by the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police.

Earlier in the case Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had appointed experts who had initiated valuing the Housing Development Infrastructure Limited (HDIL) properties which were mortgaged with the bank, so that it can be auctioned. The EOW has attached HDIL’s moveable and immovable properties worth Rs.4000 crore.

On Thursday in a meeting headed by Nana Patole Speaker of Maharashtra State Assembly, Commissioner Cooperation, senior officials of the State Finance Ministry and Charanjit Singh Sapra former Congress MLC appointed the arbitrator to adjudicate the sale of properties of HDIL.

Sapra said, “The Commissioner Co-operation has appointed the arbitrator who will evaluate the moveable and immovable properties seized by the EOW so as without further delay the monies of 9.5 lakh depositors can be fully returned back.”

In the meeting Assembly Speaker Nana Patole asked the Co-operation ministry to act swiftly so that depositor’s confidence is restored. It is also decided to speed up the merger process of the PMC bank on the same lines of YES bank.
