Mumbai blasts Convict ‘Doctor Bomb’ Who Jumped Parole arrested in UP

UP Police nabbed Ansari as he stepped outside a mosque in Kanpur

New Delhi:  The Mumbai 1993 serial blast convict Dr Jalees Ansari, who had jumped his parole, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police’s Special Task Force (STF), on Friday.

The 68-year-old convict Ansari, alias Dr. Bomb, of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case is serving a life term. He was on parole for 21 days from the Ajmer Central Prison, Rajasthan, and was expected to surrender before prison authorities today. However, Ansari did not visit the police station on 16 January, during the designated hour, and was on the run.

Commenting on the arrest of Ansari, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police OP Singh told newspersons, that Dr Jalees Ansari was arrested while he was coming out of a mosque, after offering the Friday prayers, in Kanpur.

“It’s a big achievement of UP Police,” said Singh, addressing a presser. According to reports, police from the two states coordinated their efforts to track Ansari’s movements through CCTV footage recovered from various locations in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

On Thursday, Ansari’s 35-year-old son Jaid had approached the Mumbai Police and reported a ‘missing’ complaint about his father. On Friday, the police formally registered the complaint and launched a manhunt for the terror-convict.
