MNS leader raises demand of revised rent for slum dwellers in SRA projects with housing minister Awhad

Tushar Aphale MNS leaders has written to the state Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad and has asked to increase the rent for slum-dwellers under SRA schemes as the rents decided by the government are on the lower side than the market rent

Mumbai: Amidst the ongoing pandemic crisis the state government recently decided to fix the rent to be paid to slum dwellers by developers while carrying out a redevelopment project. The decision was taken by the Minister for Housing Jitendra Awhad for the projects under Slum- Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). However, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Tushar Aphale on Tuesday in a letter written to the Housing Minister has termed the rents fixed by the state housing department as impractical.

The SRA is the nodal agency under the Housing Ministry to implement the slum redevelopment scheme. The Housing Ministry in Mumbai revised and fixed the rent as up to Bandra, the rent will be Rs 12,000 per month. It will be Rs 10,000 per month from Bandra to Andheri/Ghatkopar and Rs 8,000 per month beyond it.

Tushar said, “In my letter I have raised the present status of rent in the market and the housing minister has ignored the actual rents in the western and eastern suburbs. The rents are on the higher side. The slum-dwellers will now be paid rent by the developer as per the state government. However, in practicality the rents in the western suburbs from Bandra to Andheri range from 18,000 to 25,000 per month”

“I have sought an appointment with the minister for housing so that he can re-consider the rent for slum-dwellers in SRA projects. In the rent decided by the state government, the people will have to move out from their areas and it will hamper the education of their children,” added Tushar.
