Kin of Mumbai cops felled by Covid-19 to get Rs 65 lakh each

In a heartwarming gesture, the kin of Mumbai police personnel falling victim to novel coronavirus will be entitled to substantial compensation totalling Rs 65 lakh to help rebuild their shattered lives, officials said here on Wednesday.

The deceased police personnel’s family would be entitled to Rs 50 lakh from the Maharashtra government plus a job for one dependent, Rs 10 lakh from the Mumbai Police Foundation (MPF), and Rs 5 lakh through private bank insurance cover.

A decision to this effect has been taken by Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh, Mumbai Police Spokesperson and DCP Pranaya Ashok confirmed to IANS.

So far, the Mumbai Police has recorded the deaths of eight personnel due to coronvirus, and over 600 more are infected in the city, besides at least four deaths and more than 600 infections among policemen elsewhere in the state.

The MPF, a registered charitable trust, was founded in 2018 to accept donations from individuals, business community, professionals, celebs and Bollywood personalities to be utilized for the welfare of the police personnel.

Joint Police Commissioner Naval Bajaj said that the money is being transferred within 48 hours into the bank accounts of the bereaved family members.

So far, the Mumbai Police has lost Chandrakant G. Pendurkar, 57, Sandeep M. Surve, 53, Shivaji N. Sonawane, 57, Sunil D. Kargutkar, Murlidhar S. Waghmare, 55, Bhagwan S. Parte, 46, Madhukar Y. Mane, 57, and Amol H. Kulkarni, 32.-IANS News
