Corona scare: 39 Maharashtra tourists stuck in Uzbekistan

At least 39 tourists from Maharashtra, besides more from Gujarat, are stranded in Uzbekistan, Central Asia region, and have appealed for help from a state minister to help them return home, here on Wednesday.

In a SOS video-call to Water Resources Minister Jayant Patil, the tourists – mostly from western Maharashtra – informed that they had gone on a weeklong tour on March 10 and were scheduled to depart by a flight from Uzbekistan shortly after midnight today.

However, at the last minute, the Uzbekistan Airways allegedly cancelled their flight, leaving them all stuck in that country where there’s reportedly one suspected case of COVID-19, one of the stranded persons said.

Efforts to get help from the Indian Embassy in Tashkent also did not fructify, the tourists claimed from an undisclosed location, probably a hotel room.

Giving them a patient hearing, Patil said he would take up the issue with Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar to raise the matter with the central government.

“We shall make all efforts to ensure you return to your motherland at the earliest possible,” Patil assured them.

The stranded tourists hailing from Pune, Sangli, Nashik, Solapur, Kolhapur and around a dozen from Gujarat, are part of a group tour to Uzbekistan and was expected to return today .-IANS News
