Banjo Member’s facing unending chaos

Mumbai: Due to the ongoing Covid 19 crisis business and economical activities have been hit and is particularly affecting small scale workers. Banjo member’s who play at wedding, birthdays and make people shake their legs are getting worked up too. 

These instrument players are now facing financial crisis because of Corona virus. April May’s wedding season now has gone “What to do till Diwali” ? This question is now frightening them. 

These artists are demanding economical help from the government. In Mumbai city, more than 1 lakh people work in Banjo parties as they are popularly known. Nashik Band, Dhol Band, Koli Band, Christian Band and various other band members of the age group of 20 to 75 years are depended on it.

  
Whether it’s a marriage, birthday or Satyanarayan Mahapuja there’s a tradition to play band in that program from various years. Due to this tradition lakhs of people got livelihood many people from Mumbai-Pune are working in this area from generations. 

Banjo Player, Ibrahim Bhai Gani who works in this field for more than 50 year said, “During April-May our workers get lot of contracts they get so much work that even they don’t get time to eat their food. June to October during rainy season due to the lack of work they give their best in April and May.”

He further said “But now due to Corona these workers are worried about how to manage their livelihood and family.”

Shivaji Fansekar an another experienced Banjo member from Wadala informed saying “January to May month Banjo member’s have immense orders. Last order which received was during Holi, due to lockdown which started from March. “

 He further said ” Now Government has ordered to only let 3 member’s to play the instruments meanwhile during playing them we require minimum 10 members least due to which rhythm creates and we are able to make the people dance.

 He questioned ” Isn’t this decision disastrous for the remaining 7 members ? What about their family and livelihood ? “. He also said ” Many artists got even heart attack after listening to this order. I had called yesterday one artist he expressed that he doesn’t even have enough money to spend for daily expenses such is the situation.”

At the end he sadly expressed saying “All the ministers, leaders often used these boys during when they won election but now are totally being ignored by these same people. There are Cultural minister, Chief minister but nobody is looking after them.” (By Rushikesh Chavan)
